High Performance Computing (HPC) solves complex scientific and engineering problems computationally by going beyond serial solutions to highly scalable parallel solutions. Such an approach allows us to tackle problems of high complexity and size using HPC infrastructure. Everyday examples of HPC applied to industrial problems include designing better surfactants through computational chemistry; designing precisely targeted and more effective pharmaceutical drugs; using computational structural mechanics for designing better tires or controlling tire wear; applying advanced computational fluid dynamics to designing hypersonic flight vehicles; applying molecular dynamics to design better explosives that are shock insensitive, thus allowing safe handling and deployment . The list is enormous! There are few objects that we use in everyday life that have not been touched by HPC applications—think of your favorite smart Phone or your designer athletic shoes.
Engility has been working on HPC challenges for the U.S. Government for the past quarter century. We deliver advanced scientific and engineering technical services in support of HPC on several programs, with our primary customers coming from the Department of Defense (DOD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Enabling collaboration and reach-back for our HPC practitioners (most of whom are co-located with customers at government sites) required planning and investment from Engility.
There are few objects that we use in everyday life that have not been touched by HPC applications—think of your favorite smart Phone or your designer athletic shoes.Standing up an HPC ENovation center consolidates the tacit knowledge of our experts and Engility Technical Fellows, under one umbrella and enables the sharing of HPC related scientific and technical expertise between customers and across accounts. Members are able, and encouraged, to exchange ideas across corporate boundaries and customer agencies. The HPC Enovation Center also serves as the medium to interact with other ENovation Centers to foster cross domain solutions that make Engility’s approach to problem solving very unique, e.g., data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning combined with HPC.
As seen from the impetus for founding the HPC Enovation center, the benefits are multifold. Our customers can be rapidly briefed on emerging techniques and novel ways to apply technologies to solve their potential challenges. We can also help customers by examining common processes and solutions from a multi domain perspective to effectively harvest best-of-breed solutions to significantly improve their processes or technical solutions. It also allows our HPC thought leaders to pursue new and interesting challenges which keeps them engaged while benefiting customers.
